Abstract: |
The stratigraphy of the new foundation trenches lacked the upper layers as reported in the evaluation due to previous soil and debris stripping. The upper layer within the new trenches was heavily disturbed with redeposited material. The clay layer was filled with large amounts of brick, 19th century ceramics and oyster shell. At a depth of between 0.75m and 0.8m across the whole site was another clay layer containing higher levels of chalk and small fragments of tile and charcoal flakes. This had collapsed in part on its south-west side and formed an almost regular circle. Also revealed were the remains of a possible medieval courtyard slab to the south of a modern brick wall.
