Abstract:
A programme of architectural recording supported by a desk-top survey was undertaken to assess the archaeological and historic significance of 44 Blackjack Street. No documentary evidence for early uses of the building was located, with only anecdotal evidence for the probable uses of the building back to the beginning of the 20th century. The building however was known to have several early features, the front elevation thought to be of 18th century date. Limited observations were undertaken during stripping of the ground floor rooms. Two early fireplaces were revealed in the front range which may have been contemporary with moulded ceiling beams and panelling on the first floor. Most of the original features had been destroyed by later alterations. [Au(adp)]
