Abstract: |
A fluxgate gradiometer survey, covering an area of c.16ha, was carried out in advance of the proposed construction of a new quarry access road. The survey comprised a magnetic scan of the whole site followed by detailed survey of c.3.5ha. Areas of magnetic disturbance were identified that suggested significant modern landscaping and ground disturbance had been carried out across much of the site. There was tentative evidence for archaeological activity in the north-west of the site where there were several positive, linear anomalies of possible archaeological origin. Anomalies relating to an Iron Age/Romano-British settlement, previously identified from cropmarks, were detected. These anomalies described a large, double-ditched enclosure with internal features and a smaller adjacent enclosure, also with internal features. [Au(adp)] |
