Abstract: |
Monitoring of works to adapt and renovate a barn which lay within the medieval moated enclosure of Elmham Hall. The disturbance to potential archaeological levels was caused to localised floor lowering and insertion of service trenches. Work took place in two stages - evaluation pits and monitoring of finished levels. During ground lowering to create new floor levels only 19th century fill layers were cut into; no earlier surface was exposed, and no subsoil recognised. Small drain trenches were cut through to levels which were potentially pre-reformation but no finds were recovered form these dank clay soils and there was inadequate exposures to guess at pre-barn land use or levelling again no clean undisturbed subsoil was encountered.
