Abstract:
An archaeological survey was undertaken of Ravenswood Park with the purpose of identifying and assessing the survival of early features and to assess the overall historic integrity of the park as delineated on the Wokingham SMR. The principal historic features as depicted in Walter's Map of 1823 survived today. The external boundaries were intact, the driveway still in use as footpath albeit somewhat overgrown compared to 1823 and open grassland was still predominant in the interior. The village itself represented a divergence architecturally, however, this occupied the higher ground formerly occupied by domestic buildings and had not impinged upon the original depicted as Hannicans Lodge in 1823. The issue of the survival of features of the earlier medieval park was hard to assess as there were no reliable maps depicting these features. However, the driveway as depicted on Norden's map in 1607 was clearly in the same place as that of 1823 and the modern footpath, therefore it could be assumed that this feature at least was likely to have been of medieval origin. On the basis of this assessment of Ravenswood, it's inclusion in the Wokingham Local Plan Deposit Draft list of parks of local importance was justified and therefore policy WHE9 applied to the site.
