Abstract: |
The desk-based assessment set out to discover the range of archaeological remains likely to be found at Harold Wharf on Deptford Creek, currently occupied by the Art in Perpetuity Trust, which proposed to build a new structure on the west side of the site. Planning consent was granted for this development in 1999, with an archaeological condition attached. The assessment incorporated information from the recording of geotechnical test pits and boreholes on and around the site. The prehistoric course of the Creek probably partly underlay the eastern part of the subject site. The alluvial layer along the margins of the Creek may contain evidence of prehistoric activity, particularly from the Bronze Age, but the riverside was probably too steep for such activity here. Roman occupation in the area was concentrated at Deptford Broadway, along the line of Watling Street, to the south of the subject site. Saxon settlement was initially also concentrated at the Broadway, and probably later at St Nicholas' church to the north of the subject site. There was therefore unlikely to be evidence for prehistoric, Roman or Saxon occupation on the subject site. Most of the subject site was reclaimed from the Creek in the early medieval period by a complex of embankments and ditches, a process which continued into the 18th century. The embankment ran through the eastern part of the site. Medieval and early modern settlement continued to concentrate at Deptford Broadway, with its bridge and tide mill, and at Deptford Strand on the River Thames. The King's Slaughterhouse was built on the subject site in the late 15th or early 16th century, to supply the royal palace at Greenwich. It had a wharf and animal pound attached, and continued to operate until the mid 17th century. Its site was subsequently taken over by redware potteries. In the 19th century the subject site became part of a chemical works, and in the 20th century it was used for warehousing. There was potential for the survival of regionally important archaeological remains of the medieval and post-medieval within the boundaries of the subject site. However, the proposed development would intrude only 1.5m below the ground surface in a limited area, and disturb only layers of recent date. Therefore it was recommended that the archaeological condition should be discharged. [Au(abr)] |
