Abstract:
Trial trenching was conducted as part of the Durham Riverbanks Gardens Project. The project was to develop a long-term management plan for the riverbank environs. Part of this involved an assessment of the archaeological potential of the area. Six trial trenches were excavated. Trench A examined the foundations of the castle walls in the grounds of St. Cuthbert's Society. These proved to be a layer of sand and clay, lying directly on bedrock. A culvert, later blocked by stone, cut these foundations but tunnelled under the wall. Trench B examined garden features in the ground of St. Cuthbert's Society. Two slight stone retaining walls were identified on steeply sloping ground. Trench C examined the Principal's Walk in St. John's College. Below a substantial path were earlier garden features. These in turn overlay rubble deposits. Trench D examined the former icehouse in the grounds of Hatfield College. The inner chamber proved to be partially intact, although its roof had been removed. During the 1960s, a large cut, probably an unrecorded archaeological excavation, had partially truncated the remaining wall. Trench E examined the Preband's Walk. Two path surfaces were found, overlying a considerable thickness of clean gravel, with silt deposits to either side. A number of horizontally lying silts underlay the gravel. Trench F examined a large terrace in the grounds of St. Chad's College. A thin gravel path surface was identified, with flowerbeds to either side. A sewerage pipe trench cut this path. Partially examined silt deposits underlay the path. Finds from the excavation included pottery, clay pipes and animal bone. These had the potential to date contexts and provide information on everyday life in the area. [Au(abr)]
