Abstract:
Trial excavations were undertaken within an area of land which formed part of the medieval core of Beverley. The earliest deposits encountered were silty gravel layers overlying the clean natural gravel, which was found to lie over 3 metres below present ground levels. Sealing these layers were traces of late 12th- or early 13th-century buildings, comprising wall foundations of chalk and post pads, with associated clay floors and external metalled yard surfaces, and a number of rubbish pits. Dumping of substantial amounts of clay followed in the 13th and 14th centuries to level the ground over most of the site. New buildings were constructed in the 15th century. The latest buildings recorded on the site dated to the 18th century which were still present. Finds included coins, a lead ampulla, pottery, a pewter spoon and worked masonry. [Au(adp)]
