Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was carried out at the proposed route of a 8.1 km water main and associated infrastructure between Eccup to East Rigton. There was evidence that the course of a Roman road bisected the site and cropmarks indicated the presence of probable later prehistoric or Romano-British settlement activity in at least three locations. The study area was widely settled during the medieval period and substantial settlements were at Wickes, East Keswick and East Rigton. The proposed works would impact upon four recorded sites, including a later Prehistoric or Romano-British settlement and former field boundaries, extant ridge and furrow and a hollow way dating back to enclosure and possibly originating in the medieval period. Other sites included a later prehistoric or Romano-British settlement identified from cropmarks and surface finds and the site of a possible Roman villa at Biggin Farm. [Au(abr)] |
