Abstract: |
Three trial trenches (15m, 8m and 10m by 1.6m) were excavated to assess the degree of preservation of the internal arrangements of the garden, marked on OS maps of 1868-1933, and any remaining sections of the perimeter structure currently buried. No further sign of the perimeter wall on the west side of the garden was revealed during the evaluation, and it was considered possible that this may have lain further to the west of the area investigated, or that 20th century landscaping and the carpark lain in the western part of the garden may have destroyed remains of the perimeter wall in this area. Several features interpreted as planting beds were located in the area between the upstanding walls. [Au] |
