Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken of the site prior to its proposed residential development. Four evaluation trenches (2 x 10m by 2m, 1 x 10m by 4m and 1 x 4m by 2m), a geoarchaeological borehole and nine test pits were excavated. The evaluation found the concrete foundation slab of a large building identifiable on the 1866-70 Ordnance Survey map and possibly associated with the dockyard which closed in 1869. Other evidence of 19th century foundations were also found on the site. Later deposits included formation associated with the construction of Pepys Park in the early 1970s. The test pits and borehole provided a profile through the waterlain deposits and samples were recovered for geoarchaeological examination of a peat horizon. [Au(adp)] |
