Abstract: |
The desktop assessment was undertaken within an area of land of unknown archaeological potential. Excavations near the site had located deposits of Roman date and evidence of Viking Age industrial activity. The archaeology of the proposed development site was identified as being most likely situated on the George Street frontage since it could have been adjacent to a Roman road which may have continued in use into the Viking period. It was also deemed necessary to investigate the church building to determine whether any evidence for St George's Weslayan Chapel survived. [AIP] |
