Abstract: |
Archaeological examination of four test-pits was undertaken and the re-excavation of a number of existing drain trenches observed. The work was undertaken as remedial works had been proposed to counter damp within the Chapel at Aukland Castle (a Grade 1 listed building). Footings observed in the drain trenches were suggested as possibly representing the foundations of a chamber on the north side of the hall mentioned in the inventory made in Bishop Neile's time (1617-1628). Mortar smeared along the top of the recovered courses suggested that the walls had been heavily robbed out, the building possibly being one of a number of buildings demolished by Sir Arthur Haselrigg |
