Abstract: |
The watching brief revealed that topsoil overlay chalk on the east side of the excavation area and two deposits interpreted as re-deposited natural geological deposits on the western side. These chalky clay deposits contained ceramic building material and may have been connected with the construction of the driveway to the east. This driveway appears to have cut through earthworks, aligned south-west to north-east, connected with the 17th century bailey, a large defended outer bailey added to the existing medieval north-west bailey in 1643, during the civil war.
