Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken across the site prior to te determination of planning permission for the residential development of the site. As far as could be ascertained, the site had a fairly low archaeological potential for the prehistoric periods. The site had a low archaeological potential for the Roman period but moderate to high potential for the mid Saxon period. In particular, waterfront remains associated with the mid Saxon trading centre of Lundenwic could be present. The sites archaeoenvironmental potential for this period was high. In the late medieval period the site formed part of an extensive property known as Norwich Place. However due to post depositional impacts any medieval and post-medieval potential could proably now be defined as very low. The report recommended that a programme of test pitting (field evaluation) be undertaken prior to construction to assess whether any archaeological remains of national importance would be present.
