Abstract: |
The archaeological desktop assessment was undertaken within an area of land which was the proposed site of the new County Hospital. Documentary research identified that there was no indication that the site had any other use apart from agricultural in the period up to 1143. It was known that St Guthlac's Priory occupied a large part of the site from 1143 until 1539. When the Priory was suppressed in 1539, the section that would most easily convert to a house would be part of the north-west range, which probably contained residential quarters. The potential was recognised for the survival of structures which were part of the Priory complex as well as those associated with the later residential use of the site. [AIP] |
