Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a residential and leisure development identified that two standing buildings within the site were Listed. These comprised an aircraft hangar and a Mess and Control Tower building. A number of Mesolithic and Bronze Age flints had been found to the east of the site. However, the findspots had been located on gravel, whilst the proposal site lay on London Clay. The site was therefore considered to have a low potential for prehistoric material. Settlement in the Roman and Saxon periods appeared to have been concentrated on high ground, so that the site had only a low potential for remains of these periods. It was thought that woodland clearance had increasingly created an enclosed agricultural landscape from the medieval period onwards. However, population density appeared to have been low, and the various small hamlets in the area were remote from the study site. Although the site could therefore contain the remains of field boundaries, evidence of settlement was unlikely to have been present. It was concluded that the site had a limited archaeological potential, which had been reduced by levelling and construction works associated with the use of the site as an RAF base, and that no further archaeological measures would be required.
