Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of the site of a Grade II Listed barn, where partial demolition and rebuilding was proposed, was undertaken. A Middle Bronze Age axe, a bronze spearhead and a large hoard of silver had been recorded a short distance to the west of the site. The hoard, thought to have been lost or buried in c. 911 AD, had included 10,000 coins and over 1000 ounces of silver ingots and scrap silver, contained within a lead chest. Cuerdale Hall, a Grade II Listed Building, was thought to have been partly rebuilt in 1700, and had since been substantially rebuilt and altered, but probably retained some earlier material. The barn itself dated from 1700 or earlier, and had been extended at each end. It was recommended that minor recording should be carried out in the form of a watching brief during groundworks at the site. [AIP] |
