Abstract: |
The timber frame of Rufford Old Hall was recorded prior to an extensive renovation of its roof structure. The structure represented a substantial survival of a common medieval arrangement of an open hall with storeyed end-wings, although the present building was largely of 18th and 19th century date. It was concluded that the main structure of the building could be dated stylistically to the later 15th century, although there was slight evidence that it may have been built in the 1530s or later. Several of the more architecturally problematic areas were examined, including the eaves, the fireplace and a coved canopy. 20th century renovation works had included the insertion of large amounts of new timber and a new set of wooden pegs. It was noted that several of the original timbers of the roof structure appeared not to be in their original locations. [AIP] |
