Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief, including limited plan-area investigation and recording, was carried out at St. Paul's Churchyard during the rebuilding of the public conveniences. Important Saxon remians, including buildings of the 7th to 9th century were observed in section. Beneath the basement floor of the toilets two Saxon rubbish pits and seven 18th and 19th century burials from St. Paul's churchyard were excavated. The remains of eight individuals were recovered and analysed. The stratigraphy recorded in section, behind the main frontage wall when this was removed, was proably indicative of the quality of Saxon strata survivng beneath the Covent Garden Piazza generally. The data recovered from this site may hence inform consideration of the merits of designating the Piazza as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, in order that such remains may be statutorily protected.
