Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of the proposed redevelopment of the site as the new Cambridge Crown Court. The study revealed a potential for archaeology of several periods, notably medieval, as it lay just to the south of the village and monastic site of Barnwell. The information given in 'The Archaeology of the Cambridge Region' (C. Fox, 1923) (Cambridge), although not location specific, also suggested that the Barnwell area saw activity, if not settlement, from the Neolithic onwards, particularly in the Iron Age and Saxon periods. That this was not reflected in modern finds were perhaps more a reflection of the rapid expansion of housing and quarrying in the 19th century than the absence of evidence per se. [Au(adp)] |
