Abstract: |
A single 10m by 1.6 trial trench was excavated as an archaeological evaluation in advance of the redevelopment of the site. The trench was excavated to a maximum depth of 2m. At this depth Victorian material was still present within the homogenous layers of clay and gravel which certainly extended below the adjacent present ground surface of No. 28 Mitre Street. The implication of this depth of deposit may have suggested that there had previously been some land clearance prior to the raising of the land level by dumping. More likely, given the local history of the site, it would appear that the deposits represented the infill of a sunken feature, possibly a large pit. A marl pit depicted on an OS Map of 1881 may at one time have extended up to the line of the street frontage, thereby removing any medieval structures or deposits. The presence of bricks and building tiles within the excavated layers confirmed documentary and map evidence of this practice in the immediate vicinity. [Au(adp)] |
