Abstract: |
A desk-based study and site inspection were undertaken in advance of the granting of consent for the proposed redevelopment of the site, which lay in an area defined as being of archaeological importance. It was felt that there was an uncertain potential for finds of the prehistoric, low potential for features dating from the Roman, Saxon or early medieval periods but good potential for the medieval and early post-medieval periods. The report concluded that the survival of any archaeological deposits in general across the site was likely to have been compromised by post-depositional impacts, mainly through the construction of modern buildings. It was recommended that a programme of archaeological evaluation be undertaken prior to the development groundworks commencing and that, as any remains were not likely to be national importance, this work could follow planning permission and be secured by an appropriate condition.
