Abstract:
An assessment was undertaken in reponse to construction work comprising the regrading and elevating parts of the River Maun floodplain to offset subsidence associated with mining from the Parkgate Coal Seam from Bilsthorpe Quarry. A single site, considered to be a comparatively recent field boundary or drain had previously been recorded on the Sites and Monuments Record. Aerial photographs suggested that relict river channels containing palaeoenvironmental remains were probably present adjacent to the River Maun. Alluviation was also identified across the site, and this may have led to burial of archaeological evidence. [Au(abr)]
