Abstract: |
A building survey was undertaken of 'The Cylinders', Midhurst Road, Fernhurst. 'The Cylinders' comprised six buildings grouped around a side road to the west of Midhurst Road. The buildings were houses, probably originating as parts of a former government charcoal factory dating from the late 18th or early 19th century. The factory included industrial buildings, namely charcoal cylinder houses with ancillary structures, and possibly housing for workers and a site manager. It was probably related to another purpose-built charcoal factory of similar date located at Fisherstreet, approximately four miles to the north east. None of the buildings were inspected internally.
