Abstract:
A desk-based assessment was undertaken of the site following the submission of an application for planning permission for the residential development of the site. The desk based assessment established that the site lay within an Archaeological Priority Area identified with the Draft Lambeth UDP. It was discovered that there was little potential for prehistoric and Roman remains, but high potential for Saxon through to post-medieval deposits. A recent site investigation had demonstrated an absence of deposits prior to the 14th century. The evaluation had confirmed the presence of deposits and structures of c.18th and 19th century date, particularly kiln flues with associated structures and finds. Construction of foundations and a basement for the current building had destroyed archaeological evidence across a proportion of the site, however the evaluation demonstrated that areas of stratigraphy had survived within the site.
