Abstract: |
An archaeological assessment was undertaken to address the potential threats to the disused railway and other contiguous sites of historical and archaeological interest brought about by phased proposals to create a recreational route along the line. The report described the Bowes Railway, an early planned colliery line which developed between 1826 and 1855, placed it within its regional and national context and noted that it was a significant example of the early colliery systems which were the progenitors of modern railways. The report strongly recommended that the trackbed of the railway, as a significant and intelligible survival of early colliery systems, should be preserved and that any decision to remove should only be taken due to its identification as a real rather than a hypothetical hazard.
