Abstract: |
The desk-based assessment found that there were several findspots for late prehistoric and Roman material on the headland where Wyke Regis was situated. These had been noted to the north and east of the study site but had usually been observed and recorded briefly during building or service installation operations. Previous excavations to the east of the church had found evidence of occupation in the Roman period in the form of trackways, post holes, ditches and inhumations Wyke Regis was founded in the late Saxon period but the nucleus of the Saxon and medieval village was a little further to the east around Manor Farm and the medieval church. The study site seemed to have been open fields belonging to the Manor until c.1800 after which it continued in agricultural use into the 20th century. The site had been acquired by the Ministry of Defence just before the Second World War. A visible installation was probably for anti-aircraft defence. [Au(adp)] |
