The abstract describing the content of the publication or report
Abstract:		 Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a motorway service area, undertaken as part of an Environmental Statement, revealed that it may have been the location of the now deserted medieval village of Coton. Until recently, it had been thought that earth moving activities associated with the construction of the M6 had effectively destroyed any remains. However, recent aerial photographs had suggested the presence of subsurface archaeological deposits which may have been related to the deserted village. A possible wind-mill mound also lay within the site, and a long barrow lay to the north. Other sites recorded in the surrounding area included a round barrow, a Bronze Age palstave, Iron Age finds, cropmarks representing enclosures and other features, an ice house and an 18th century mansion. It was proposed that a written scheme of archaeological evaluation should be devised and implemented prior to the commencement of any development. [AIP]
