Abstract: |
Following a request by Medway City Council for archaeological watching brief work along the eastern curtain wall of Rochester Castle where soil collapse had been occurring, preliminary documentary research was undertaken. It was believed that excavations had taken place in the area which were not mentioned in the specifications, and that these might be affecting the soil deposits. It was discovered that there had been an excavation, in 1976, and that there were three relieving arches associated with the eastern curtain wall. It was considered likely that material used to infill two of the arches in 1978, after the archaeological excavation, was not entirely consolidated, and it was these modern depoosits which were settling, rather than the wall moving.
