Abstract:
A watching brief was carried out of three trenches within the scheduled site of St Thomas Priory and three trenches outside of the area. Excavations for new floors within the cottage were also observed. Observation of the trenches between the cottage and the leat showed that they were cut through garden soil. Trenches within the leat cut mainly through 20th century fill, although the south-west bank was located. Observations within the cottage revealed the foundations for three 18th century blacksmiths forges. These post-dated a sandstone wall of two phases and sandstone garden kerbs. Six sherds of residual medieval pottery were recovered together with five sherds of Cistercian type ware, 18th, 19th and 20th century pottery and glass and one fragment of moulded sandstone with chamfers. A small green glazed medieval floor tile was found and a moulding of marble was also found by the builders. [Au]
