Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a motorway service area, which formed part of an Environmental Statement, identified that no archaeological or historical sites had been recorded within the proposal area, although a boundary stone of Waltham Forest was located on its eastern boundary. WIthin a 1km radius, 24 SMR references had been recorded. These included a scatter of prehistoric material typical of the Essex clay hills, and a much denser distribution of medieval moated sites and post-medieval buildings. Recent investigations elsewhere on similar geology and topography had demonstrated that the clay hills had been inhabited from earliest prehistory, even if at a lower density than the better-studied river terraces. Because of this background, the County Council's views stipulating non-intrusive investigation prior to determination were considered to be appropriate to the site. [Au(abr)] |
