Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of the proposed development of a new golf course and conference centre. The desk-based assessment and aerial photograph analysis indicated a landscape which had seen human activity since the prehistoric period. Extensive cropmarks throughout the area attested to human activity between the Bronze Age and Iron Age. There was no direct evidence for Anglo-Scandinavian activity within the study area. However, the place name Barrowby was derived from the Old Norse. The evidence indicated that the proposed development area was largely under arable agriculture during the medieval period. There was little evidence for occupation at that time. It was possible that any medieval settlement was confined to the area around the hall, an area heavily disturbed by later improvements to the park and garden. During the 18th century Barrowby Hall was remodelled and the park and garden created or improved. Improvements to the park appeared to have continued in the 19th century. Several discrete features of probable archaeological remains were identified within the proposed development area. These remains were likely to have been of no more than regional importance, with the majority being of local or negligible importance. Great care had been taken by the development design team to minimise the impact on archaeological remains. The impact of the proposed development on the majority of archaeological remains would be insignificant. In areas with a greater impact a mitigation strategy would be developed and implemented.
