Abstract:
The assessment was undertaken in advance of the proposed development of Ashfield Technology Park. Two archaeological sites adjacent to the proposed development area were listed on the SMR, including a SAM on Hamilton Hill. Fieldwalking had yielded a single fragment of struck flint and a single sherd of Romano-British pottery within the proposed development area. A number of fragments of heat-affected stone were associated with these finds. The presence of heat-affected stone may have suggested that the finds were associated with settlement activity. A stone built causeway or bridge and a contemporary stone built footbridge lay at the eastern edge of the proposed development area, but were due to be demolished to make way for the new Mansfield Ashfield Regeneration Route. The parish boundary between Mansfield and Sutton in Ashfield was marked by a hedge toward the north of the proposed development area, part of which would be removed during the development. It was concluded that the development area had a low environmental archaeological potential. A minor palaeochannel crossed the site, but geotechnical investigation suggested that the deposits it contained were not of archaeological significance. There existed some potential for prehistoric Roman-British and medieval activity within the development area; further site investigation would be required to clarify this potential. [Au(abr)]
