Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during groundworks associated with the renewal of a water pipeline. Excavations in the village of Great Maplestead had recorded evidence of medieval occupation, and a church near the site had Anglo-Saxon origins. Roman urns had been found in 1858. During the watching brief a possible hollow way was observed, which was interpreted as an earlier phase of Church Street. Four boundary ditches and a post hole or pit were recorded along another part of the pipeline. Cartographic evidence indicated that the ditches pre-dated 1777. [AIP] |
