Abstract:
The 'strip and record' investigation provided evidence for the post-medieval (18th century) use of the excavation area, which lay to the rear of the Station Road street frontage. Four phases of activity were identified based on the stratigraphy. The finds evidence suggested that these were all short lived. Two ditch complexes were investigated. These appeared to have defined the rear boundary of properties on the Station Road street frontage. One ditch complex was undated, containing only a worked prehistoric flint flake, which was thought to have been residual. Finds evidence from the other ditch suggested that it was infilled in the 17th/18th century. Three beam slots with associated post holes were found. These were thought to have represented the remains of two 18th century timber ancillary buildings. Other post holes provided evidence for later ancillary timber buildings. Post-medieval structural material found in demolition spreads and pits probably resulted from the demolition of a 17th/18th century building on the Station Road street frontage. [Au(adp)]
