Abstract:
An evaluation was carried out at a proposed development site. Five trenches were excavated, of which two revealed archaeological features. Within trench 4, a stone-filled drain containing 19th century pottery was revealed. Trench 1 contained several features, the most significant of which were two linear features which lay perpendicular to one another and which may have represented beam slots for a building. One contained medieval pottery. Three pits, one of which was square cut and was apparently a post-pit, were also recorded. The trench was extended in order to establish the full extent of the possible building, but any further foundations had either been destroyed by a ditch containing 18th century pottery, or had never been present. No floor levels had survived. The nature nd density of features at the site was not indicative of occupation, and it ws thought possible that the proposed development area may have formed part of a village green. It was concluded that the structure probably represented the remains of a small agricultural building or shelter of medieval date. [Au(adp)]
