Abstract:
An evaluation comprising desk top survey and trial excavation was carried out at a proposed development site, which lay in farmland during the 18th century and had become parkland by 1886. A sceatta coin [DATE/PERIOD??] had been found within the proposal site, and a further 23 sites had been recorded in the near vicinity. These included listed buildings of 17th-19th century date, an 18th century church, Saxon features and pottery, and a 13th-14th century chapel building which had been remodelled in the 19th century. Remains of the second of two medieval manors at Wollaston had survived untill recently with associated fishponds directly west of the site. Medieval ridge and furrow earthworks surrounded the village. Excavation of trial trenches revealed a small number of pits and ditches, and nine sherds of pottery spanning c. 1250-1730. It seemed that soil clearance and soil importation had occurred across the whole of the application area during the post-medieval period. [AIP]
