Abstract: |
Two trial trenches were excavated in advance of residential development and revealed topsoil and debris overlying the subsoil. Below the subsoil was the natural brickearth, into which were cut four prehistoric pits and numerous 19th/20th century features, mainly pits, brick walls and a brick well. The prehistoric pits produced burnt flint, with one producing a struck flint, all of a prehistoric date. The interface between the subsoil and brickearth produced burnt flint and a small fragments of pot (Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age pottery) and a broken Neolithic arrowhead. The excavation showed that there was a prehistoric occupation from the Neolithic to the Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age in and around the development area, but any habitation site lay in the vicinity of the site, not on the site.
