Abstract: |
The field evaluation involved the excavation of one trench in advance of a proposed development for five flats. The trench revealed the earliest deposits represented garden/cultivation soils. Due to the size limitations the relationship of these layers to either houses or open ground was not determined. The south-east end of the trench contained the flint and mortar remains of a wall foundation cut into the earlier deposits with an associated floor surface. A cellared building had largely destroyed the earlier walls. The north-west of the trench contained remains of a chalk wall, but it was not possible to determine the exact nature of the wall. One possible explanation was a privy at the end of the garden. The rest of the trench revealed intercutting pits which contained a mix of post-medieval to modern pottery. [Au(adp)] |
