Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken of land which currently lay in seven fields, in advance of a possible application for mineral extraction. Three ring ditches had already been identified within the proposed development area, although their precise date was uncertain. It was unlikely that other substantial Neolithic or Bronze Age ceremonial or burial features were present, given the visibility of the known remains, but there was potential for the recovery of unmarked graves and cremations. The potential for the survival of settlement of these periods was uncertain. Neolithic features were not common in the area, even in the adjacent quarry excavations, but Bronze Age occupation evidence was extensive. Flint scatters could indicate the position of settlement of this date, but no concentrations were noted during the 183 field survey, even though small quantities of flint were recovered. There was an absence of evidence for an Iron Age site in the proposed development area. However, recent excavations in the nearby Cotswold Community Quarry had unexpectedly uncovered Iron Age post hole buildings, gullies and pits that were not found in field evaluation, and such remains could not be discounted at this stage. The trackway, with its road junctions and associated enclosures and field systems, was probably part of the Romano-British land use of the area. This supposition was based on the presence of small quantities of Roman pottery found in the fields during the 1983 survey, but also the similarity of the trackway system to others exposed and examined in the adjacent quarry areas. The system which traversed the proposed development area appeared to link a known settlement to the north of the site with a site to the south. A probable Roman site to the east was also known. The recent discovery of Anglo-Saxon buildings in the Cotswold Community quarry indicated that there was potential for finding occupation of this period. There were, however, no particular grounds for believing that settlement of this period survived within the proposed development area. Medieval use within the site was uncertain. Some possible traces of ridge and furrow were detected on air photographs, but those to the east of the trackway seemed most likely to have been modern land drains. The close similarity in the location of the post-medieval field and road system to that of the Roman period was of great interest and suggested the potential to investigate the continuity of the land boundaries in this area over a long period of time.
