Abstract:
An archaeological assessment of the proposed development site and its immediate environs was undertaken. The report incorporated an audit of both discrete archaeological and historical landscape components and presented a synthesis of the overall chronology of the defined area. Based on this assessment, recommendations were provided to exploit areas of specific interest or uncertainty within the record, thereby informing management strategies and mitigation prior to development, as well as enhancing the historical interpretation of the area. Historic maps of the area showed it to be an open, apparently undeveloped area in the early part of the 19th century and there was little to indicate that it had previously been the site of intensive activity. Its position close to the course of the town ditch some distance east of the core of the village, which developed in the late Saxon period around St Andrew's Church, suggested that it was peripheral to the Saxon and early post-Conquest settlement. Although the village expanded eastwards in the later medieval period, the site lay some distance north of the core of settlement along the present Main Street. The contraction of the village due to the Scottish Wars in the later medieval and post-medieval periods meant that the assessment site was not built upon until the later 19th century. It was concluded that the assessment area exhibited relatively low archaeological potential and that any development work within the site was unlikely to disturb archaeologically significant structures or deposits.
