Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed extension to a quarry identified that several areas of ridge and furrow had been revealed by aerial photography of the site and the surrounding area. Further features had also been identified within the site itself, including several old field boundaries, a path and two trackways. Archaeological remains recorded in the surrounding area included a medieval corn mill, the 17th century Elvaston Castle, and a site where a Neolithic axe, a Roman coin and urn, Saxon personal ornaments and an undated inhumation had been found. Post-medieval features and structures included a canal, a railway station, several mills and a factory complex. It was concluded that the principal archaeological characteristic of the application area was its ridge and furrow field systems; it was suggested that the group value of these should be given some consideration. The potential for palaeochannels within the application area was considered to be high. It was also noted that the setting of the Eastern Avenue at Elvaston, which formed part of a landscaped park with Grade II* status, would be detrimentally affected by the close proximity of a quarry.
