Abstract: |
The watching brief was undertaken on the service trenches on the north, east and south sides of the church, and along the eastern side of the footpath to the church. Parts of four subterranean brick burial vaults were exposed. An L-shaped mortared Heavitree stone base aligned north/south was exposed in the trench opposite the northeast corner of the church. This was presumably from a monument or some other structure within the graveyard. Opposite the southeast corner of the church was a 'raft' of brick and stone rubble that was part of the modern drainage system. Two parallel sections of brick walling, either wall footings or more likely the east and west walls of another subterranean vault. The full depth of the brick vaults was not established, so it was unclear if they contained single or multiple interments. They were all probably 18th or 19th century in date. [Au(adp)] |
