Abstract: |
A geoarchaeological evaluation, consisting of borehole sampling, was undertaken with the aim of providing a detailed analysis of the different sedimentary units in order to reconstruct the nature of the palaeo-environmental conditions influencing the site through time. The sediments sampled indicated a floodplain environment exposed to numerous depositional and erosional events throughout the Holocene epoch. Archaeologically, the site had recorded some of the oldest organic deposits in London. Prehistoric settlement/land use evidence was perhaps more likely on the occasional raised islands and sand bars within this channel system, although the potential for timber structures within the marsh levels with their good organic preservation was well established. Potential archaeological survival of a later date at higher levels also seemed likely to have been disturbed by relatively recent basementing and other made ground disturbances. [AIP] |
