Abstract: |
Gradiometer survey was undertaken in two areas close to the village of Godolphin. Area 1 lay on a north-east facing hillside, c400m to the west of Godolphin House. Area 2 was situated c.450m west-north-west of Godolphin Cross. Aerial photographic evidence for the two areas and their environs indicated the presence of circular and sub-circular features with associated linear and rectilinear patterns. Together these suggested former settlement foci and field systems. Detailed gradiometry was undertaken with the aim of confirming and adding to the AP data. This survey formed part of a wider archaeological evaluation being undertaken by Cornwall Archaeological Unit. Gradiometry recorded a plethora of anomalies of archaeological interest in both survey areas. Within Area 1 a series of substantial linear responses were detected which were characteristic of part of a field system. Immediately to the north of this, a wide sweeping enclosure was suggested by a number of curving anomalies and trends. It appeared, however, that the site had been damaged by ploughing as few discrete anomalies were detected within this suggested enclosure, instead there was a general spread of enhancement. Survey in Area 2 recorded circular feature surrounded by numerous linear and pit-type anomalies which appeared to form a complex of enclosures and fields. The activity at this site appeared to have been multiphase but it was not possible to establish any chronology using geophysical data alone. Faint trenches were also evident throughout the datasets and whilst these may have been archaeological, any explanation would have been speculative. In Area 2 many of these trends were parallel and were attributed to ploughing. [Au(abr)] |
