Abstract: |
The Morrells Brewery site was situated on two islands on either side of the medieval street front of the suburb of St. Thomas, where previous excavations had revealed significant urban occupation from the 12th century. Where other sites along the street had not been adversely affected by later developments, the chances of survival of significant archaeological remains was high, and it would be necessary to preserve or mitigate destruction of archaeological deposits. The historic brewery buildings dated from the 18th century and were not listed, but were in a Conservation Area, and a requirement for retention of a substantial proportion of the older buildings could have been expected.
