Abstract:
Assessment and preliminary evaluation (fieldwalking) was undertaken on land proposed for mineral extraction. Assessment identified a palimpsest of cropmarks (likely to be of Iron Age or Romano-British date) located within the proposal area whilst Early Mesolithic artefacts had been recovered from the northern environs of the area. The site was also of palaeoenvironmental potential due to its location within a low-lying part of the Humber wetlands. Fieldwalking ws undertaken to the south of the principle foci of the cropmark palimpsest. Clusters of worked flint (dating to the Early - Middle Bronze Age) were recovered from the northern and eastern sectors of the field. No pottery of pre-Roman date was found, whilst the location of the three sherds of Roman greyware and three sherds of late Roman pottery (post AD350) at the southern end of the evaluated area suggested that the main focus of Roman activity lay further to the north. Six sherds of medieval and eight sherds of late medieval pottery were recovered - the sparse distribution was not indicative of medieval settlement. [AIP]
