Abstract:
This report was commissioned in response to a proposal to extend Sunderland University's St Peter's Campus. The study area consisted of land to the south-east of St. Peter's Church, Monkwearmouth. Prior to 1700, this area consisted of a ballast dumping ground and the Ham Sands, a tidal area within the Wear Estuary. This land became available for development during the later 18th century with the improvements made to the River Wear. A street system was built during the early 19th century. Its urban development existed alongside industrial developments in the eastern part of the study area throughout the 19th century, and was demolished to allow construction of new industry in the early 20th century. This was in turn demolished in the late 20th century with the extension of the North Sands Yard. The archaeological features on this site were likely to be limited to the below ground traces of early 19th century and later industrial features which had been severely truncated by structures related to the North Sands Shipyard, overlying ballast dumped onto the estuarine sands during the post-medieval period. There was, however, a possibility that at the northern edge of the site, these ballast dumps may have overlain early medieval activity related to Monkwearmouth Abbey. [Au(adp)]
