Abstract: |
Desk based assessment was undertaken on the site of a proposed new prison. The study highlighted several areas of archaeological potential including a number of buildings now demolished. Some of the plots may have retained archaeological deposits from the early post-medieval or later medieval periods. It was also possible that features associated with a moated platform may have survived within the proposed development area. In addition there were a number of sites where settlement or occupation (of the 13th-17th centuries) was suggested but not proven, and sites where circumstantial evidence suggested prehistoric or medieval activity.
